Mats Lindholm

Author

Mats Lindholm writes thrillers and crime fiction in German and English. Born to a German mother and an American father stationed in Germany with the U.S. military, he grew up bilingual on the edge of a garrison town, where two passports and two languages were simply the weather of childhood.

At sixteen his family relocated to Maine. The cold light of New England, the long roads and the shuttered mill towns gave him both a second writing tongue and the first of the landscapes he would return to in his fiction — places where everyone knows everyone, and where what is known is rarely the same as what is said.

His novels circle the same fault lines: buried pasts that refuse to stay buried, crimes that slip across borders and jurisdictions, the question of who gets to decide what counts as the truth. A life lived between two countries lends his crime writing its particular texture — investigators and suspects who are always, in some sense, foreigners to one another.

Today he lives on a farm in the Austrian Alps, where he writes in the early hours before the work of the land begins. The limestone contours of the mountains and the quiet of the farmhouse have become his desk and his pressure gauge: stillness from which the violence of his plots is measured.

His new novel, The Cascade (working title), is due out later this year. He continues to write in both languages, and sometimes translates himself — carrying a sentence across the border to see what it confesses on the other side.
